State Senate Candidate is a Proven Ally for Non-Profits

Michael E. Carn has a Heart for Non-Profits

The task was simple.  Deliver a 15 minute presentation about technology and take a few questions from the Broward County United Way Council of Executive Directors.  After a passionate 30 minute question and answer exchange, an agency head asked if I would teach technology planning to Broward County Non-Profits if they could secure grant funding.  Not wanting to look like a deer in headlights, I found the courage to say yes.

And, just when I thought the grant application cycle would buy me some time, a Council member reentered the room, quickly caught up on what she missed and raised her hand to inform the meeting that a grant had been awarded to the Community Foundation and they were in need of an instructor.  So, there went my time and in the span of only one hour, I found myself committed to teaching forty (40) Broward County Non-Profit Organizations an 8-10 week course in Strategic Technology Planning.

A few weeks later, the stage was set.  The curriculum was reviewed and tweaked.  The class participants were screened and selected.  The overhead projector was set, the name tags displayed and the breakfast treats arranged.  It was time to teach.  But I would be the student doing most of the learning – learning about the value and vitality of the services and functions that Non-Profit Service agencies provide to keep our communities in balance.   The following is a partial list of the participating agencies.
